of hamas through egypt, from senatorred john mccain and graham and others, asking him to urge the stop of the spread of weapons to sinai which is a threat to egypt's national security and sovereignty. a couple days ago senator graham, one of the three senators, threatened president morsi and said unless you take a month positive role here in this exploding situation in the middle east, republicans in congress will cut off united states aid to egypt and the president morsi responded by helping to broker this cease-fire, and now we will see how he will respond to some more of these threats. it is clear that washington, dc is watching the performance of the egyptian president very closely. >>trace: and that was ed henry on the north lawn. and now, a former senior director for middle east affairs at the national security council and currently the managing director of the washington institute. we sometimes are skeptical, but, secretary of state, hillary clinton flies in, egypt signs on and israel signs off, and we have peace. things in the middle do not seem to work that smooth. your take?

graham and ayotte say they're going to put a hold on ambassador rice if, in fact, she's nominated to be the secretary of state, they're going to put a hold on her, even though there's no direct responsibility, direct knowledge, and no accusation of direct knowledge by her on any of these matters, and she's saying what, in effect, she was told to say by the intelligence community. yet we're told that democrats are ready to fight. a democratic aide tells nbc news, this is getting people's back up. the general sense of mood is this is ridiculous. she's obviously qualified. no one on our side thinks there's any substance whatsoever to the republican criticisms. the aide also questioned whether republicans, besides mccain, graham and ayotte would think this was a smart fight to pick. after all, it would be a high-profile fight with a qualified african-american woman. >> and she's not just qualified. she is supremely well qualified. she has tremendous experience. she's been enormously successful with her work at the u.n. we were able to marshal some of the most significant sanctions on

graham, john mccain, kelly ayotte who said we respectfully disagree with the white house statement that there are no unanswered question about ambassador rice's sunday appearance. they talk about the acting director of the c.i.a. saying that the c.i.a., the f.b.i. removes the references to al-qaeda in the talking points. to ple vent compromising and ongoing criminal investigation. they say, the senators say at 4:00 this afternoon, the c.i.a. officials contacted us and indicated that the acting director morrell misspoke in the earlier meeting and the c.i.a. says it deleted the al-qaeda reference, not the f.b.i. and unable to give us a reason why. one thing also about the al-qaeda being taken out, it was not just the five sunday shows blaminth spontaneous demonstration there wasn't, never a demonstration. susan rice said this. >> president obama said running for president he'd row focus our effort on al-qaeda. we decimateed al-qaeda. usama bin laden is gone. we decimateed al-qaeda. usama bin laden is dead. he said that al-qaeda was decimated in both interviews so that was a misleadin
